Dragon-A-Day Online: Day 57

While mulling over the Threadshrike and its apparently simple anatomical arrangement, I came to a few conclusions:

  • The Threadshrike is probably a ambush predator, but along the lines of an an archer fish or a frog, striking from surprise, but not overpowering its prey by clawing it to bits the way a lion might.
  • As such, it does not need the catlike shape that so many of my dragons have. Instead, I’ve opted for something more like a horned lizard, with a wide body and slightly splayed limbs. I’m not sure if the horned lizards are especially fast, but it doesn’t seem like they would be.
  • However, it needs (or probably ought to have) some sort of coiled at-rest stance, so that it can extend its neck violently for a killing bite.
  • The wings could probably be smaller or arranged differently, though the current wings are evocative of faerie mythos (at least to me).
  • Sometimes when I draw a dragon head, I don’t put a mouth on it, because I like the shape so much. This proves problematic when I want to show the dragon’s teeth.

That’s about it for tonight; see you tomorrow for another round of speedpainting.
